THE CONSTRUCTION DATA TYPE

A drawing shows a building.
Elements give it structure.

A wall is an assembly of parts. A window belongs to an opening. A floor connects spaces. Those relationships matter as much as the objects themselves.

Elements bring those parts into a construction ontology: a shared structure for what things are, what they contain and how they relate. It gives CIM the context to reason about construction.

Elements give the construction ontology its understanding of the building: what each part is, how it relates to other parts, and what a complete assembly needs.

That elemental understanding opens up new use cases in construction. CIM can reason about what should be there, follow relationships across the set, and recognise intent that a drawing never puts into words.

Know what's missing.

Knowing the parts a building needs makes absence meaningful. Follow an Element to the details, connections and scope that should support it, and surface the gaps.

FOR EXAMPLE

An awning appears on an elevation, but its support detail is missing from the structural set.

Find discrepancies across the set.

Some conflicts only emerge after several reasoning steps. Follow the chain from a design requirement through the spaces, assemblies and components it applies to, across multiple documents.

FOR EXAMPLE

Fire strategy → room use → wall assembly → door schedule. A mismatch can sit several connections away from the original requirement.

Read the unwritten intent.

Understand what the design is trying to achieve, even when the notes leave it unstated. Use the relationships between Elements to surface likely intent, with supporting context for a person to review.

FOR EXAMPLE

A wet-area layout points to waterproofing and junction details, even where the drawing does not spell out every interface.
